Total Hip Replacement (Minimally invasive)

A total hip replacement (also referred to as total hip arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure that replaces a worn or damaged hip joint with a prosthetic made of artificial materials that can replicate normal movement and relieve pain.

During this process, the head of the femur (thigh bone) that constitutes the ball in the hip joint is scrupulously taken out and replaced with another, smaller, artificial ball that is firmly fixed to the rest of the thigh bone. The socket in the pelvis (acetabulum) is also reshaped or roughened to accommodate a new artificial socket, which attaches well to the artificial ball to restore painless, smooth movement.

Types of Hip Replacement Fixation

The artificial joint parts or the implants may be attached to the bone using two methods: with or without bone cement.

  • Cemented Hip Replacement:
This technique is characterised by the artificial ball and socket being fixed by an acrylic bone cement that is specific and fixes well to the bone. This method is usually favoured in the case of elderly patients, whose bone tissue is soft.
  • Uncemented (Press-Fit) Hip Replacement:
This technique is becoming increasingly popular with younger and more active patients, where the elements of the implants are pressed-fitted into the bone, without cement. The surfaces of the implants are either roughened or coated to stimulate the natural bone to grow and fix firmly to the implant with time. This gives a biological fixation that is permanent, long-term, and is reinforced due to the natural growth of the bones.
  • Hybrid Hip Replacement:
In other situations, both methods may be combined, i.e. the socket may remain uncemented where the femur part (the stem and ball) is cemented. These are two very stable and long-lasting methods combined.

Materials Used in Hip Implants

Hip replacement components are made from high-quality medical-grade materials designed to ensure durability, biocompatibility, and smooth movement. Common combinations include:

  • Metal-on-Plastic: The most widely used type is a metal ball combined with a plastic (polyethene) socket. It offers excellent performance and reliability for most patients.
  • Ceramic-on-Plastic: A ceramic ball paired with a plastic socket, offering smoother movement and lower wear, especially suitable for younger, more active individuals.
  • Ceramic-on-Ceramic: Both components are made of ceramic material, offering exceptional wear resistance and longevity. This combination is often chosen for younger patients with high activity levels.

Each material combination is selected based on your age, bone quality, activity level, and overall health to ensure the best long-term outcome.

Hip Replacement Recovery with us

In Vivaan Speciality Clinic, we specialise in minimally invasive surgery and the early rehabilitation of patients to help them move fast. The majority of our patients start to move and do physiotherapy in the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery, with strict guidance from our rehabilitation staff. Through the correct post-operative therapy, the majority of them experience significant mobility and comfort within weeks, and would resume normal activity shortly thereafter.

Many people experience stiffness or restricted movement after traditional hip replacement, but with the advanced direct anterior approach performed by our highly skilled surgeons, recovery is faster, and mobility is restored much sooner.

  • Muscle-sparing method: Minimal disturbance to muscles and soft tissues ensures quicker recovery.
  • Early mobility: Most patients can move and walk comfortably shortly after surgery.
  • No major restrictions: You can sit, bend, or move freely post-surgery.
  • Less pain, faster healing: Reduced trauma to tissues results in minimal post-surgery discomfort.
