A total hip replacement (also referred to as total hip arthroplasty) is a surgical procedure that replaces a worn or damaged hip joint with a prosthetic made of artificial materials that can replicate normal movement and relieve pain.
During this process, the head of the femur (thigh bone) that constitutes the ball in the hip joint is scrupulously taken out and replaced with another, smaller, artificial ball that is firmly fixed to the rest of the thigh bone. The socket in the pelvis (acetabulum) is also reshaped or roughened to accommodate a new artificial socket, which attaches well to the artificial ball to restore painless, smooth movement.
The artificial joint parts or the implants may be attached to the bone using two methods: with or without bone cement.
Hip replacement components are made from high-quality medical-grade materials designed to ensure durability, biocompatibility, and smooth movement. Common combinations include:
Each material combination is selected based on your age, bone quality, activity level, and overall health to ensure the best long-term outcome.
| Aspect | Traditional Hip Replacement | Direct Anterior Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Surgery Duration | Longer operation time | Quicker and more efficient |
| Muscle Cutting | Muscles are cut during surgery | Muscles are preserved (tissue-sparing) |
| Pain & Blood Loss | More pain and higher blood loss | Minimal pain and bleeding |
| Post-Surgery Movement | Restricted and delayed sitting or bending | Early, natural movement within 1–2 days |
| Physiotherapy | Starts late, slower progress | Starts early for faster recovery |
| Recovery Time | Takes several weeks or months | Significantly faster, within days to weeks |
| Hospital Stay | 5–7 days | 2–3 days on average |
| Return to Normal Life | Gradual return to activity | Resume normal routine much sooner |
| Cost Efficiency | Higher due to longer stay | More economical and time-saving |
In Vivaan, each patient has an individualised recovery program, which is aimed at providing the smooth progression of the period between the surgery and total activity. Our orthopaedic specialists are devoted to the idea of quick recovery, more mobility and comfort over the long term, all of which would help you resume life on your own terms.
In Vivaan Speciality Clinic, we specialise in minimally invasive surgery and the early rehabilitation of patients to help them move fast. The majority of our patients start to move and do physiotherapy in the first 24 to 48 hours following surgery, with strict guidance from our rehabilitation staff. Through the correct post-operative therapy, the majority of them experience significant mobility and comfort within weeks, and would resume normal activity shortly thereafter.
Many people experience stiffness or restricted movement after traditional hip replacement, but with the advanced direct anterior approach performed by our highly skilled surgeons, recovery is faster, and mobility is restored much sooner.
This approach enables patients to regain their natural movement more quickly and return to an active lifestyle without prolonged limitations.
Most patients begin walking within 24–48 hours after surgery. Our anterior-lateral, tissue-sparing approach and early physiotherapy program help you regain mobility quickly and safely.
Post-surgery discomfort is minimal and well-managed with our advanced pain-control protocols. Because our technique involves less muscle cutting and soft-tissue trauma, recovery is smoother with significantly less swelling.
No major restrictions are required. Our modern surgical approach allows you to sit, bend, and walk naturally soon after surgery, without the limitations associated with traditional hip replacements.
Thanks to our quicker surgical technique and faster recovery, most patients can return home within a few days of the procedure, much sooner than with conventional methods.
Yes. The combination of a shorter operation time, faster healing, and reduced hospital stay makes the overall procedure more economical and efficient without compromising quality or safety.
